Academy of Scientific Research & Technology – Global Research Networks Connections

Connecting Egyptian Research Centers/Institutes & Universities to GÉANT Pan-European Research Networks:

Through the existing National Research & Education Network “NREN”, the Academy of Scientific Research & Technology – Egyptian National S&T information Network, managed to agree with GÉANT as to peer with GEANT and provide the advanced communication services and high-bandwidth to Egyptian Research Centers/Institutes & Universities, free of any subscription charges, the Academy will only incur the fees of the international link to Europe. Immediately after establishing Egyptian GEANT link, Egyptian research institutes, universities, researchers and students will have gained access to a vastly increased speed of data transfer with thousands of universities and science facilities across Europe, Middle East area, and southern & eastern Mediterranean through EUMEDConnect3 Project and the rest of the world. The Academy is already participating in CERN experiment, which with no doubts will benefit from such peering/link also the following research centers and universities are promising users for this link:

    • Academy of Scientific Research – Grid Node.
    • National Authority of Remote Sensing.
    • Electronic Research Institute.
    • Central Metallurgical Research & Development Institute.
    • City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications.
    • National Research Center.
    • National Agriculture Research Center.
    • Theodor Bilharz Research Institute.

From Universities:

    • Mansoura University
    • Cairo University
    • Assiut University
    • Menoufia University
    • Minia University

Connecting Egyptian Research Centers/Institutes & Universities to Internet 2:

The Academy of Scientific Research & Technology has commenced a 1Gbps dedicated leased circuit to Internet2. At over a billion bits per second (Gbps), the new world class high-speed connection to the Global Research & Education Networks, enables Egyptian researchers and students to participate in the most advanced research programs around the world – in high energy physics, astronomy, remote sensing, weather and climate science – and hundreds of others – by connecting universities, research facilities and schools throughout the U.S. with their peer institutions across Egypt.

The Internet2 Community: Enabling the Future
Internet2 is an exceptional community of U.S. and international leaders in research, academia, industry and government who create and collaborate via innovative technologies. Together, we accelerate research discovery, advance national and global education, and improve the delivery of public services. Our community touches nearly every major innovation that defines our modern digital lives—and continues to define “what’s next.”
Internet2 Unparalleled Community
Internet2 comprises:
    • 282 U.S. institutions of higher education
    • 86 leading corporations
    • 66 affiliate members, including government agencies
    • 42 regional and state education networks
    • More than 65 national research and education networking partners representing over 100 countries
Internet2 Connections to leading specialized research networks:
The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) is a high-performance, nationwide network designed and optimized to support large-scale scientific research. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science and managed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, ESnet connects more than 40 DOE research sites, including the entire National Laboratory system, its supercomputing facilities, and its major scientific instruments.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Network
Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the new NOAA high-capacity research network, called NWave, is built on a set of 10-Gigabit per second dedicated waves on the national Internet2 Network. The network waves are used to provide dedicated, high-capacity connections between climate and weather researchers and NOAA's key high-performance computing sites across the nation.
